My Grandson’s Smile: A Grandmother’s Story

When my grandson was born, the whole family was overjoyed. He was the first grandchild on our side, and everyone doted on him.

Then the diagnosis came. Sickle cell disease. I didn’t know much about it at the time. I just knew it was something that would make his life harder.

I’ve spent the last few years learning. I’ve learned about the pain crises, the hospital visits, the things he needs to stay healthy. I’ve learned what to look for when he’s not feeling well. I’ve learned to be a support system for his parents, who are bearing the brunt of the caregiving.

But most of all, I’ve learned that my grandson is not his disease. He’s a bright, active, loving boy. He has challenges, but he also has joy. When he smiles, it’s the most beautiful thing in the world.

If you’re a grandparent who has just found out your grandchild has sickle cell disease, take it one day at a time. You have a lot to offer — your experience, your stability, your love. That matters more than you know.
