World Sickle Cell Day 2025: BHASNet Hosts Community Gathering in Regina
A powerful community gathering marks World Sickle Cell Day 2025.
On June 19, BHASNet hosted a community gathering in Regina to mark World Sickle Cell Day. The event brought together over 80 people — patients, families, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates — to raise awareness and build community.
The gathering featured a panel discussion with patients and healthcare providers, a Q&A session, and breakout groups where attendees could share their experiences and connect with others. There was also a resource fair with information about BHASNet programs and partner organizations.
“The energy in the room was incredible,” said Immanuela Ezugba, Chairperson of BHASNet. “People who had been navigating sickle cell disease in isolation for years were suddenly surrounded by others who understood. The conversations weren’t just about medical challenges — they were about everyday life, about hope, about small victories that don’t always make it into a hospital chart.”
One attendee shared: “I’ve been living with SCD for 30 years, and this is the first time I’ve been in a room full of people who get it. I didn’t know how much I needed this.”
BHASNet plans to make the World Sickle Cell Day gathering an annual event, with plans to expand to other cities in Saskatchewan and beyond in 2026.
