Caregiving for My Daughter: What I Learned About Love and Strength

When my daughter was born, we didn’t know she had sickle cell disease. The diagnosis came when she was just a few months old, after we noticed that she seemed to be in pain without any obvious cause.

I remember sitting in the doctor’s office, hearing the words, and not knowing how to process them. I knew about sickle cell, but I didn’t know what it would mean for my daughter’s life. I didn’t know what it would mean for my life.

What I’ve learned is that caregiving is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s the small things — managing pain at home, scheduling appointments, learning to advocate in a system that doesn’t always make it easy. It’s showing up day after day, even when you’re tired, even when you don’t know the answers.

I’ve also learned that caregiving doesn’t mean doing it alone. There are other parents, other families, who understand. BHASNet has connected me with families who have been through similar journeys, and that connection has been a lifeline.

To other caregivers: you are seen. What you do matters. And you don’t have to do it alone.
