World Sickle Cell Day 2025: Reflections on a Milestone

June 19 is World Sickle Cell Day — a day we’ve been building toward since BHASNet was founded. It’s our flagship day, and 2025 marked our first full campaign around it.

We ran a month of programming leading up to June 19: a webinar series featuring patients and clinicians, a social media campaign amplifying personal stories, and a community gathering in Regina that brought together over 80 people — patients, families, caregivers, clinicians, and advocates.

What struck us most was the energy in the room. People who had been navigating sickle cell disease in isolation for years were suddenly surrounded by others who understood. The conversations weren’t just about medical challenges — they were about everyday life, about hope, about small victories that don’t always make it into a hospital chart.

One attendee told us: “I’ve been living with SCD for 30 years, and this is the first time I’ve been in a room full of people who get it. I didn’t know how much I needed this.”

World Sickle Cell Day reminded us why we started this network. It’s not about events or campaigns. It’s about people. About making sure no one has to carry this alone.
